RESEARCH: HIGH MAINTENANCE

High maintenance was written by Simon Biggs. Directed by Phillip Van

One short film convention which this film makes very interesting is the plot twist. The film is set in the future in which a womens robotic husband doesn't meet her needs. He is then returned and exchanged for an upgrade. The new male isn't satisfied with the women so decides to switch her off. This film is successful because it is able to maintain the audiences attention and keep them constantly intrigued with the story line. The initial small twist is that the women can turn off and exchange the male robot. This makes the audience think the females are in control in this life. The main twist is when the new male robot turns off the female showing that both sexes are robots.

The film is set at a dining table. The diegetic sound from them eating food on the table makes the situation seem normal thus increasing the strength of the twist when it is revealed.

  1. You focus on one specific short film convention -the twist - and explain it clearly.
