Evaluation Q2. Combo of Main and Ancillaries

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I made an EMAZE as well as written in depth about my work on Evaluation Q2

I have made a film poster and radio trailer which accompany my short film. In order to effectively promote the film, the poster and radio trailer must have links to the short film.

My poster links well to my film as it features the four different characters who are in my film. This informs the potential audience of who the characters are and the type of character they are. For instance, the boy is standing above the film title smiling. This shows to the audience that the boy is the main character (as he occupies the most space on the poster) and that he is happy with his actions in the film. It also suggests to the viewer that the boy thinks he is better then the girls who are seated. The boy also has a slightly smug smile. This suggests to the viewer that the boy is somewhat proud of what he's done and this will entice viewers in to watch the film to find out why he feels like this. The image of the girls sitting down looking up towards the boy is used to fill the film title 'Gotcha'. This hints to the viewers that the girls are united and long for the same boy.
My poster contains the tag line for the film ‘sometimes one girl just isn't enough’. This gives an incite as to what the film may be about. It suggests that the boy has been seeing all three of the girls in the poster. For the audience, this gives them an incentive to see the film as they will want to know what will result from the boys actions.

These aspects help to attract the target audience as they are able to see the aspects of the film which they'll be interested in.

My poster relates well to my short film. The pictures included on the poster give an insight as to what the film will be about. As a result, entice more viewers. The information given at the bottom of the poster agree with film poster conventions in terms of font and content. It provides information about the production company and the actors in the film. Most importantly to the viewers, it informs them of the release date for the short film. This is one of the main purposes of the film poster.

My radio trailer also uses the tag line ‘sometimes 1 girl just isn't enough’ which creates the link between the poster and the radio trailer. The radio trailer also relates to the film poster by the references it makes. For example, the radio trailer says '3 girls, 3 dates' this theme of 3 runs through my poster as well. There are 3 silhouettes of glasses and 3 girls. This theme is key for consistency throughout my main product and ancillary tasks. As well as this, my radio trailer has sections of dialogue from my short film. This helps to give the listeners a teaser as to what to expect from the short film. It also helps to confirm the link between the radio trailer and the short film.
My radio trailer also uses a jingle from the film. This creates a recognisable association between the two and gives a hint towards the genre of the film. This tune reminds listeners of the attitude and presence of the boy in the film and the poster.

My radio trailer can be found here

Both ancillaries, poster and radio trailer, provide the audience with institutional information. It widens my number of platforms to which I can communicate with my potential audience. The synergy throughout is also a benefit as audiences know the type of film to expect and as a result the target audience will come to see the film.
